Word Classification - Choosing The Odd Pair Of Word

Word Classification: Classification refers to defining a rule which applies to all the elements in the group. Word Classification refers to identifying the relationship between the words.

Choosing The Odd Pair Of Words: In these type of questions, certain pairs of words are given  and we are to identify the odd pair. in the group. We see that all the pairs except one, satisfy a certain common relationship. The candidate is required to identify the  relationship and then choose the pair in which the words are differently related, as the answer.

Example 1 : Identify the Odd pair: Blacksmith : Anvil, Carpenter : Saw, Barber :Scissor, Goldsmith : Ornaments, Sculptor : Chisel

(a) Blacksmith : Anvil      (b) Carpenter : Saw        (c) Barber :Scissor    (d) Goldsmith : Ornaments   (e) Sculptor : Chisel

Answer: (d)

Solution: On analysing the pairs we can see that in all groups except in option D, Goldsmith: Ornaments, the second word is the tool used by the first . Whereas ornaments are not tools. Hence it is the Odd pair.

Example 2 : Identify the Odd pair:  See : Eye, Hear : Ears, Smell : Nose, Touch : Skin, Tongue : Taste

(a) See : Eye     (b) Hear : Ears     (c) Smell : Nose    (d) Touch : Skin    (e) Tongue : Taste

Answer: (e)

Solution: On analysing the pairs we can see that in all groups except Tongue : Taste i.e. (e), first denotes the function performed by the second.whereas tongue is not a function of taste it is taste which is the function of tongue. Hence it is the Odd pair.

Example 3 : Identify the Odd pair: Bouquet : Flowers, Bunch : Grapes, Furniture : Chair, Album : Photos

(a) Bouquet : Flowers    (b) Bunch : Grapes    (c) Furniture : Chair    (d) Album : Photos

Answer:(c)

Solution: On analysing the pairs we can see that in all groups except Furniture : Chair i.e. (c), first denotes a collection of the second.whereas furniture is not a collection of chairs there can be other items that can be included in furniture.. Hence it is the Odd pair.
